Things that I thought would and could!

I knew that foster kids would come with all sorts of problems I was told that they are not like my bio kids! I knew this! But when you see it for real it still hits you like a mack truck!

Button has said some interesting words that caught me off guard!

"I need to do a Sh*t and a Pi$$"

"What the F**K is wrong with this toy"

This is just a sample of a few words! Now I know this is language that must have been part of her DAILY life! These words don't have the TRUE means for her! So I am trying to correct her but in a way that isn't over the top... And not to make a BIG deal of it!

So far so good and I can see that she is picking up her NEW words! I am starting to see use of manners!

Food was a huge issue when Button arrived! Food I put on the table she looked at it like she had NEVER seen it ever! These foods are to us EVERYDAY food! Everyday I have given her a little more NEW food!

To Button chips(french fries) and bread/butter was all I think she had eaten! WE now can give her apples, bananas, yogurt, carrots and weetbix!!! This is a HUGE STEP for her and us!!!

Button still cries for her mum but it happens less and less! Button has asked why she cant be with her mum! I have found this hard to answer and what I have been doing is reassuring her that she is SAFE and LOVED here! I don't want to tell her that her Mum cannot look after her! I don't want that to be what she thinks of when she sees her mum at visitations!

She will come to me for a cuddle and when I picked her up from her last visitation she told that she loves me which just melted my heart!

It is hard to talk to kids about their parents, isn't it? Obviously, Slugger's situation is very different. He's old enough now that we can talk about things a bit more specifically. But, in his life book, the social worker wrote him a letter and it said the more generic "your mom couldn't keep you safe." I like that phrase. If Button's mom is currently in parenting classes, etc, you could add that she's doing everything she can to learn how to keep her kids safe.

How darling that she said she loved you. I know a family that feeds their kids like that too. Its sad.

Oh Chelley. How sweet that she told you that she loves you. Keep up the reinforcement and good work. Poor little pip living on french fries and bread and butter.

I have not shared this yet on my blog but we just completed foster training "in case" we want to go this route in the future. I learned through this training that it can be very trying with the naughty words and what not. I have also learned I may not be cut out for it. We are still praying about it. All I can say is I have a lot of respect for you! Your a special lady!!!

Have you decided what to say to her about her mom? It really is difficult and I have no advice, but I do know that children often make up explanations to fill those holes that are so much worse than the truth.

thank you for sharing your stories.

Be gentle on the words. I grew up in foster care and heard tons of swearing at home in my daily life. Honestly I had no idea that it was a problem! It took me years to undo my vocabulary, and I wanted so much to be a good girl for my lovely foster parents who actually were brought to tears over my swearing.

I must visit your blog again :)!

How amazing and fascinating to hear about. What an experience!

I have to ask, as an American, I have no idea what weetbix are!
